Through services like Flickr, then Facebook and Instagram, we tried to curate our images by getting others to do it for us.
More than a decade ago, the tech world hit on one partial solution to picture overload: Make images social. “But that brought about its own problems - it started to get overwhelming.” “With the invention of the smartphone, there was nothing that humans did, absolutely nothing, that they didn’t also make an image of,” said Martin Hand, a sociologist at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and the author of “Ubiquitous Photography,” an academic inquiry into the blessed problem of too many photos. Photos also seems to understand the tone and emotional valence of human interaction, things like smiles, giggles, frowns, tantrums, dances of joy and even snippets of dialogue like “happy birthday!” or “good job!” The resulting montage, synced to a swelling Hollywood score, mixed obvious highlights - birthdays, school plays - with dozens of ordinary moments of childhood bliss. Google’s computers can recognize faces, even as they age over time. Now in this single two-minute montage, Google Photos had given me a glimpse of the answer. What, one might ask, was the point of capturing all these moments? My obsession has created an archival nightmare videos and pictures of Samara and her older brother, Khalil, both born in the time of smartphones, now span several terabytes - more images than any human might ever have time to meaningfully review. The montage was of my 5-year-old daughter, Samara, whose nearly every waking moment has been thoroughly and permanently memorialized by me, her camera-obsessed father. Then I pressed Play and within 30 seconds, I was a crumpled, weepy wreck. I had seen such A.I.-produced clips before - Facebook’s tone-deaf year-in-review montages are a recurring blight - so I was not expecting much. Instead there was an alert from Photos, letting me know that Google’s image-processing robots had created some kind of montage from my videos. I had looked at my phone one morning in April, expecting more news of global woe. There are few things more precious on our phones than photos, and finally there's a convenient place to keep them.The first time Google Photos made me cry, it was with a sucker punch. In many ways, Google Photos feels like everything we wanted iCloud to be. The big picture? Google Photos may not be the perfect photo backup, storage, and sharing solution for everyone, but because of its ease of use, robust feature set, and surprisingly helpful Assistant tool, it's going to be a great pick and a new standby for many-particularly those of us who have a hard time remembering to back up. However, you can choose to save the images in their original resolution to your Google Drive-it'll just count against your Drive storage.

Those shooting on DSLRs and higher quality cameras should note that the images won't be stored in full resolution for free. iPhone photos and photos from small-ish point and shoots won't suffer from a major loss of quality. Rest assured that for most people, that's just fine.

It's true: The free tier of Google Photos uploads photos in "High Quality," meaning that the images are compressed from their original resolution, provided said original resolution exceeds 16 megapixels. If you're thinking about trying the service out, here's what you need to know to make sure you get the most out of Google Photos. Photo metadata is sort of an expected feature for any photos platform, though, and Google Photos is far beyond such basics with the rest of its client. Inside of each collection, you'll see your photos in nice, large, easily navigable thumbnails, organized chronologically according to the date stamp on the photo (which is retained from your camera). The best thing about Google Photos is it works exactly the way you think it should: Your photos live at and are categorized in user-named albums or "collections" by upload. Google Photos is an easy, relatively frictionless way to back up, store, access, and share your photos.
I usually think about doing so only when my computer unexpectedly refuses to start. I know I should be backing up my photos and data, but I'm stubborn.
